Coursework - Archaeology

Archaeology PhD students choose areas of specialization in consultation with their primary advisor and advisory committee. See the Anthropology program of study page on the  Harvard Griffin GSAS website for a more detailed presentation of archaeology program objectives and student expectations. 

For students entering the graduate program in August 2023 or later Archaeology PhD students must fulfill the following course requirements: 

  • Anthropology 2250: Contemporary Issues in Archaeology (offered every other year in the Fall)
  • Anthropology 2070: Archaeological Theory (offered every other year in the Fall)
  • One Course designated as a "Thematic Archaeology Course (with a gradaute component; Various semesters)
  • One Course designated as a "Regional" Archaeology Course (with a graduate component; Various semesters)
  • Anthropology 3070: Professionalization in Archaeology (Ordinarily offered every Spring, taken in G2 year)
  • Anthropology 3636:  Pedagogy in Anthropology (two-credit course;  Offered every Spring; taken in G2 year)
  • Eleven four-credit courses in archaeology, anthropology, or other fields chosen in consultation with the primary advisor(s) and advisory committee.

For students entering the graduate program before August 2023: 

  • Anthropology 2250a and 2250b: Proseminar in Archaeology
  • Anthropology 2070: Archaeological Method and Theory
  • Anthropology 3070: Professionalization in Archaeology
  • A two-credit course, Pedagogy in Anthropology (Anthropology 3636)
  • Twelve four-credit courses in archaeology, anthropology, or other fields chosen in consultation with the primary advisor(s) and advisory committee.

Required courses must be passed with a grade of B or better. 

The expectation is that the student will be able to complete the program in six years. Beyond the tenth year of registered graduate study or upon completion of the Dissertation Completion Fellowship year, students are required to withdraw if they have not successfully completed all requirements for the PhD degree. Students can apply for readmission for the degree in the term for which they submit their dissertation.
