ABSTRACT:     This talk will explore various approaches to outreach and collaboration for archaeology. I will discuss working with the media, using social media, and building public participation into archaeological field programs. I draw on examples from my museum work as well as the Magic Mountain Community Archaeology Project and Astor House Community Archaeology Project, both in Golden, Colorado, a collaborative research program involving Zuni elders in the Reserve region of New Mexico, and recent work I did in France looking for a pilot with the Depart of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

Dr. Michele Koons is Curator of Archaeology at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. As an archaeologist she studies ancient complex societies and is especially interested in political dynamics and social networks. Michele has a passion for archaeology that involves local communities and has conducted research throughout the United States, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, China and France. As a museum curator she enjoys bringing the behind-the-scenes experience to the public, as well as engaging in conversations and collaborations around repatriation and decolonization.
