Trevor is a doctoral candidate in anthropology at Boston University whose dissertation focuses on how Indigenous Alutiiq people in Alaska’s Kodiak Archipelago used root vegetables, and how paleoethnobotanical techniques can be used to recover culinary practices disrupted by colonialism. Specifically, he researched how root vegetables like riceroot (Fritillaria camschatcensis) were a staple food before Russian contact in the 18th century. He used scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis of macrobotanical remains and residue analysis of pottery food crusts to track their use in deep time.
