Think Global Health: Paul Farmer and the Audacity of Accompaniment | Arthur Kleinman

The Department of Anthropology at Harvard University is glad to share a new article written by Arthur Kleinman, Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology, and published by Think Global Health. The piece, titled "Paul Farmer and the Audacity of Accompaniment: Reflecting on Paul Farmer's extraordinary legacy," delves into the life and work of the late Kolokotrones University Professor and chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine in the Blavatnik Institute at HMS. To commemorate the second anniversary of Farmer's death, Kleinman recounts Paul's time as a MD-PhD mentee under his supervision and the forthcoming beliefs, philosophies, and practices behind his revolutionary career.

Kleinman shares:

I think often about Dr. Paul Farmer—the world-famous global health pioneer and founder of Partners In Health—and even more so today, the anniversary of his passing in 2022. Over the past few years, core ideas that Farmer cared deeply about have come into vogue. National Public Radio covers the "structural violence" of social and health inequality. The Atlantic publishes features on social medicine. The Economist reported recently that "trust-based giving" is now in. Fox News uses the word "equity."
