The Department of Anthropology is pleased to share that Harvard Anthropology Alum Anne Lheem '21 has received the Gates Cambridge Scholarship and will begin the MPHil in Gender Studies at the University of Cambridge this fall.
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship selected twenty three of the "most academically outstanding and socially committed US citizens" to be part of the 2023 class of Gates Cambridge Scholars at the University of Cambridge.
The US Scholars-elect, who will take up their awards this October, are from a wide range of backgrounds. They come from 24 universities across the United States and beyond, including four institutions that have for the first time produced a Gates Cambridge Scholar (Hunter College (CUNY) in New York, Towson University in Maryland, Hochschule RheinMain (HSRM) in Germany and St Olaf College in Minnesota).
Sixteen are women and seven are men. Fourteen will pursue PhDs while nine will undertake one-year master’s degrees.
Lheem shares:
I am so honored and grateful to be granted with this opportunity to continue my further studies and research affecting women and gender minorities in South Korea around topics of mental health, aesthetic standards, and the health, social, and geopolitical implications of body modification practices in relation to such standards.
A big thank you especially to the folks of the anthropology department here at Harvard who have served as my mentors, advisors, teachers, and colleagues over the last few years. Becoming a serious student of this discipline and having the privilege of learning from my mentors/advisors of this department has been one of the most impactful life experiences that I have had, that has certainly shaped me into the person and scholar I am today.
Congratulations to Anne Lheem for her outstanding work.
