Professor Michael Herzfeld Awarded Honorary Greek Citizenship

On July 8th, 2021, the official Greek government gazette announced that by Decree of the President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou Michael Herzfeld (Ernest E. Monrad Research Professor of the Social Sciences in the Department of Anthropology), was awarded honorary Greek citizenship. The citation describes Herzfeld as “among the internationally leading social scientists who have contributed to, but during the second half of the 20th century have also played a catalytic role in, the fulfillment of two high aims: (a) the incorporation of Greece as an object of systematic research in the field of Anthropology and more generally in the theoretical debates among the scholarly communities of the Social Sciences and (b) the development and consolidation of the field of Modern Greek Studies in the U.S.A., but also in Britain, Canada, and Australia during the past 40 years.”
