The Department of Anthropology at Harvard University is pleased to announce that current Post-Doctoral Fellow [Ping-hsiu Lin](/people/ping-hsiu-alice-lin) will be continuing in our department as an Assistant Professor of Anthropology beginning on July 1, 2025.

Ping-hsiu Alice Lin is a socio-cultural anthropologist who works at the intersection of political economy, labor, and environmental studies. Her in-progress book, tentatively titled "Precious Economies: Making Gems in Inter-Asian Worlds" examines processes of value creation through a study of the global gem trade across South and Southeast Asia. From mines along the Afghanistan-Pakistan borderlands, to workshops in the narrow lanes of Peshawar's inner city, to the clearing houses of Chanthaburi in Thailand, Lin traces how rocks are gradually transformed into precious and sought after gems. The book demonstrates how imperial legacies, geopolitical conflict, and the development of geosciences collectively shape artisanship, mineralogical knowledge, and aesthetic tastes. Lin will join the Anthropology Department as an Assistant Professor in July 2025 and looks forward to teaching courses on “Transnational Asia," "Artisanship and Expertise," “Postcolonial South Asia,” and "Politics of Natural Resources."
