January 10, 2018
Mary Steedly
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our colleague, Professor Mary Steedly, on January 4th, 2018. Prof. Steedly was a major figure in the ethnography and social anthropology of Indonesia. Her research focused on the Karo Bataks, of North Sumatra. Her books include Hanging without a Rope: Narrative Experience in Colonial and Postcolonial Karoland (Princeton University Press, 1993) and Rifle Reports: Gender, Nationalism and Peasant Resistance in the Karo Area, 1945-1950 (University of California Press, 2013). Mary was much beloved by faculty, students and staff in the department of Anthropology, and she will be greatly missed. A brief obituary may be found here.
